The elections for the European Parliament that took place on June 13 in Greece show substantial increase for the KKE. With the 99,12% of the 99,13 per cent of all votes counted, KKE polls 9,5% of the nationwide vote and elects 3 MEPs. As far as the other Parties are concerned, ruling New Democracy receives 43.1% and 11 MEPs, PASOK 34% electing 8 MEPS, while Synaspisjos and LAOS (Popular Orthodox Rally) will each elect one MEP with 4.2% and 4.15% respectively
The electoral results show a significant increase for KKE, compared to both the results at the General Elections of last March and those at the European Elections of 1999. The increase is especially noticeable at the main urban centers of the country Compared to the March 2004 results, ND has a slight decrease while PASOK counts important loses, but the overall sum of these two parties still remains high. Rizospastis commenting the electoral results, notes that the ballots deliver a strong message of discontent, of popular disaffection and condemnation of the imperialist wars, and the anti-popular policies promoted by EU and the national governments. The first three candidates in the list of KKE for the European Elections are comrades: 1.
