It is with great sadness that the Marxism-Leninism Today collective learned of the death of Gilberte Salem.
Comrade Salem was a long time anti-colonial fighter and a friend of several of us at MLT. Her companion, Henri Alleg, credited her with saving his life from the torture and imprisonment he incurred in the Algerian anti-colonial struggles at the hands of the French colonial regime, a fact recounted in his powerful indictment of colonialism, La Question. We are proud to have had a hand in the book’s re-publication in the US.
Gilberte was a revered figure in the French and Algerian left and, along with Henri, a staunch opponent of the opportunism afflicting elements of the Communist movement in the most recent period.

Our heartfelt condolences go out to Henri, Jean and their families. We, too, feel the loss of this beloved comrade..
