Today, August 14, 2017, we begin a new school year. The conditions are terrible for promoting education in the country. With a shortage of 300 teachers and after the consolidation of 163 schools, childhood in our country is yet another victim of oppression and social injustices at the hands of Wall Street’s Financial Control Board and the island’s government. Each boy and girl in our country’s schools is one more dollar sign for Julia Keleher, the Board, and [Puerto Rico’s] governor. (Keleher, a Washington – based consultant, was recently named as Puerto Rico’s secretary of education.)
A cut of $163 million is being applied to the Department of Education. The recent budget approved by the Wall Street Board makes cuts in the work day, the pension system, and the country’s public education. For this fiscal year, the government faces a $950 million budgetary cut. This includes a $78 million reduction applied to the payroll, operational expenses, municipalities, and more. The University of Puerto Rico will receive $240 million less than last year. Another $218 in cuts will result in the number of monthly work days being reduced by two. This represents 10 percent of the workers’ salaries. One has to stress that the cuts will be continuing incrementally over the coming fiscal years, and so the Fiscal Control Board is deciding the figures for the next fiscal year.
Presently the country is in the hands of those who have no interest in the educational, cultural, and economic development of our country. Their sole interest is to be able to plunder us and fix up conditions for doing so. The purpose of all these measures is to reduce the value of our labor so as to attract investors. One way to make good on such a plan is to reduce access to education at all levels.
We of the working class cannot allow these attacks. Let us organize as the working class into worker councils in our districts and in work centers. We don’t place our hopes in the courts and in the law that they themselves have created. Let us arrange our forces so as to organize ourselves as a producing class. The Communist Party of Puerto Rico urges strengthened organization of the working class in order once and for all to exit the capitalist crisis in our country.

Hoy, 14 de agosto de 2017 comenzamos un nuevo año escolar con condiciones nefastas para fomentar la educación del país. Con un déficit de alrededor de 300 maestros y luego de la consolidación de 163 escuelas, la niñez de nuestro país también es víctima de la opresión y las injusticias sociales impuestas por la Junta de Wall Street y el Gobierno. Cada niño y niña en las escuelas de nuestro país es otro signo de dólar para Julia Keleher, la Junta y el gobernador.
El Departamento de Educación recibirá un recorte de $163 millones. El recién presupuesto
certificado por la Junta de Wall Street vislumbra recortes en las jornadas laborales, sistema de pensiones y la educación pública del país. En este año fiscal, hay un recorte de $950 millones en el gobierno. Esto incluye $78 millones en recortes para nómina, gastos operacionales, municipios entre otros. La Universidad de Puerto Rico enfrentará un recorte de $204 millones. Otros $218 millones en recortes serán de la reducción de dos días mensuales de trabajo lo que representa 10% del salario de los trabajadores. Cabe recalcar que para las próximos años fiscales, los recortes seguirán incrementando así lo dictamine la Junta de Wall Street para el próximo año fiscal.
Actualmente, el país está en manos de quienes no les interesa ni el desarrollo educativo, ni
cultural, ni económico de nuestra sociedad. Solamente les interesa poder saquearnos y mejorar esas condiciones para hacerlo. Todas estas medidas buscan poder reducir el valor de nuestro trabajo para así atraer a inversionistas. Como parte de este plan, reducir el acceso a la educación a todos sus niveles, es una forma de reducir el valor de nuestro trabajo.
La clase trabajadora no podemos permitir estos ataques. Organicémonos como clase trabajadora en consejos obreros en nuestros barrios y centros de trabajo. No pongamos nuestras esperanzas en los tribunales y en la ley que ellos mismos han creado. Pongamos nuestras fuerzas en organizarnos como clase productiva. El Partido Comunista de Puerto Rico insta a fortalecer la organización de la clase trabajadora para salir realmente de la crisis capitalista en nuestro país.
