The editorial collective of Marxism-Leninism Today would like to thank and express our appreciation to all those readers, supporters and friends who contributed to our successful campaign to send a shipping container of medical supplies to Cuba.
On November 19, after multiple disasters in Cuba (two hurricanes, a major earthquake, and electric power grid failures) exacerbating critical shortages and the ability to provide medical care in Cuba, Global Links, a Pittsburgh nonprofit dedicated to improving health in communities with need, issued a disaster appeal. We published the appeal on our website.
Working with Global Links, MLT readers, supporters and friends were able to raise twenty-five thousand dollars, which was enough to purchase and ship the priority items requested by the Cuban health authorities.
A full 40-foot shipping container, weighing nearly 15,000 pounds, will include syringes to vaccinate over 350,000 patients, hundreds of cases of critical supplies including catheters, sutures, sterile surgery supplies, sterile water for preparation of IVs, surgical instruments, pre-op sponges and more. The supplies will ship on February 4th.
There was a little bit of drama. The new US Administration’s Executive Orders regarding shutting down foreign assistance were interpreted by some companies as prohibiting shipments to Cuba, even humanitarian aid, pending review. But on January 27 Global Links received confirmation that it was cleared to ship to Cuba.
