They have extracted the insides of Mother Earth and buried our poisoned people in the cemetery of human misery.
A cactus flourishes in the desert that is liberty in Middle America. It grows with drops from the sprinkling of pain and from the unity of the peoples.
Its spines store up and give off water. They are filters that purify communities of cyanide and metals that poison the human body and the heart of Mother Earth
Cactus has the courage and love of the woman who embraces struggles of the indigenous, peasants, and workers. She is pursued and assassinated by thugs, armies, and the police, those faithful protectors of coffers enriched through the hunger and the historic suffering of the peoples. Chiapas, Guerrero, San Luis de PotosÃ, Triqui, San Juan de Copala, Oaxaca in México; Guatemala, Honduras, El Salvador, Costa Rica, Panamá, Colombia, Chile, and Argentina are under assault by the military, mining, and agro-industrial complex of neoliberal globalization.
From the flowers and spines of the cactus flow the suffering and the blood of Mother Earth. Â
The technological invasion of finance capital destroyed the sacred mountains. It imprisoned waters with its dams and life on the planet. The planetary hunter shot his weapons with a sharpshooterÂs precision on April 27, 2010 thus commemorating last monthÂs world celebration of Mother Earth.
The bullets penetrated into the spines and murdered the heart of CACTUS in Latin America. Her name is Beatriz Alberta Cariño Trujillo (Betty Cariño), now a martyr of popular struggle, as is also the assassinated Finnish citizen Juri Jaakkola, a human rights observer and another martyr.
They extract the lead for the bullets from the hunger of the peoples, from the chewed lungs and prematurely old faces of mineworkers, and from the wrinkled skin, painted with sickness, of women who washed clothes in contaminated water.
They were the same bullets used in Iraq and in Guantanamo. ItÂs the lead of the military coup that killed journalists and peasants in Bajo Aguan, mothers and children in Honduras.
They are bullets shot by fundamentalist cowards who take shelter in the name of God, democracy, law, and order.
CACTUS symbolizes resistance. With it we salute Betty and Juri and all the martyrs, leaders, communities, and peoples, with the fraternal spirit of the National Front of Popular Resistance. The Front struggles against torture, crimes against humanity, and the all encompassing hatred of internal and foreign oppressors.
We raise our voices. We mobilize the peoples and the historic consciousness of solidarity against slavery, racism, and exploitation of all the condemned on Earth
The historic consciousness of CACTUS brings hope for resistance and unity among peoples of Latin America against the military, mining, agro-industrial complex. Its spines are the symbol of our outrage, of resistance by peoples of the world.
Juan Almendares is a Honduran physician. Formerly Rector of the National Autonomous University of Honduras, last year he ran for the presidency of Honduras for the Democratic Unification Party. He is an environmental activist, human rights defender, torture survivor, and a leader in the resistance movement opposing the coup that removed President Mel Zelaya in 2009.
CACTUS signifies ÂCenter for Community Support Working Together, which is a Mexican-based human and environmental rights organization. Its director Betty Cariño was killed by paramilitaries on April 27 as she accompanied a caravan bringing supplies to the besieged city of San Juan Copala in Oaxaca, Mexico.

Han extraÃdo las entrañas de la Madre Tierra y han convertido a nuestros pueblos envenenados en el cementerio de la miseria humana
Un cactus florece en el desierto de la libertad de Mesoamérica. Crece con las gotas del rocÃo del dolor y de la unidad de los pueblos.
Sus espinas almacenan y decantan el agua. Son filtros que depuran las comunidades del cianuro y los metales que envenenan el cuerpo humano y las entrañas de la Madre Tierra.
Tiene el coraje y el cariño de la mujer que abraza la lucha indÃgena, campesina y obrera;  perseguida y asesinada por sicarios, ejércitos y policÃas; fieles guardianes de las arcas que se han enriquecido con el hambre y el sufrimiento histórico de los pueblos.
Es el asalto por el complejo militar minero agroindustrial de la globalización neoliberal desde Chiapas, Guerrero, San Luis de PotosÃ, Triqui, San Juan de Copala, Oaxaca en México; Guatemala, Honduras, el Salvador, Costa Rica, Panamá, Colombia hasta Chile y Argentina.
En las flores y espinas del CACTUS brota el sufrimiento y la sangre de la Madre Tierra.
La invasión tecnológica del capital financiero derribó las sacras montañas, encarceló las aguas en las represas y la vida en el planeta. El cazador del planeta disparó sus armas con la precisión letal del francotirador el 27 de abril 2010, para conmemorar la celebración mundial del mes de la Madre Tierra.
Las balas penetraron en las espinas asesinando el Corazón del CACTUS de América Latina, cuyo nombre es Beatriz Alberta Cariño Trujillo (Betty Cariño), mártir de la lucha popular; como el también mártir asesinado, el finlandés Juri Jaakkola, observador de Derechos Humanos.
El plomo de las balas se extrajo con el hambre de los pueblos, con los pulmones carcomidos y los rostros prematuramente envejecidos de los obreros mineros y la piel arrugada; pintada por enfermedades que adquieren las mujeres cuando  lavan las ropas en las aguas contaminadas.
Fueron las mismas balas que se emplearon en Irak y en Guantánamo. Es el plomo del golpe militar qua ha matado periodistas, campesinos del Bajo Aguan; mujeres, niños y niñas en Honduras.0
Son las balas disparadas por cobardes fundamentalistas que se amparan en nombre de Dios, la democracia, la ley y el orden.
El CACTUS simboliza la Resistencia. Con él saludamos a Betty y a Juri y a todos los y las mártires, dirigentes, comunidades y pueblos; con el espÃritu fraterno del Frente Nacional de Resistencia Popular que lucha contra la tortura, el crimen de lesa humanidad y el desamor planetario de los opresores internos y extranjeros.
Levantemos la voz, movilicemos a los pueblos y la conciencia histórica de la solidaridad contra el esclavismo, el racismo y la explotación de todos los condenados de la tierra.
La conciencia histórica del CACTUS es la esperanza de la resistencia y la unidad de los pueblos de América Latina contra el Complejo Militar Minero Agroindustrial y sus espinas son el sÃmbolo de nuestra inconformidad, de la Resistencia de los pueblos del mundo.
